Chocolate, published in 2018, reissued 2022

402 pages featuring men 4 women Craigslist.com personal ads

Chocolate initially began as a website which was featured in The Wrong Biennial in 2018 hosted by Sometimes.gallery. The interactive website and book featured a collection of “Men Seeking Women” personal advertisements that share one common characteristic - they each use the word “chocolate” to name and describe black women. The user-generated content was compiled over the span of two years from the popular classifieds site, Craigslist.com. The ads are organized into four chapters based on the common stereotypes they perpetuated. With this arrangement, the intent was to not only expose the internalization of black female stereotypes within male fantasies, but to also reveal the counter-intuitive obsession with our culture’s shadow material.
